Omoiyaru is the verb form adapted from the word Omoiyari1Footnote details, and means to act with empathy or to be considerate. — the kind that notices what someone might be going through and responds with quiet kindness.
This perfectly captures what lies at the heart of our counselling practice: being fully present, listening deeply, and offering support that is respectful, practical, and genuinely human.

Counselling, as we know it today, began to take shape in the early 1900s. It grew from a need to support people facing everyday challenges — such as relationships, work, study, or emotional stress — without necessarily involving medical or psychiatric treatment.
Influenced by psychology, education, social work, and philosophy, counselling developed its own values, ethical standards, and frameworks. It became recognised as a distinct profession focused on listening without judgement, supporting personal growth, and helping people find their own way forward.
At Omoiyaru, counselling means creating a space where you can talk openly, be heard with care, and explore your thoughts — at your own pace.
This approach is guided by Kathlyn Daijo, a registered generalist counsellor and member of the Australian Counselling Association (ACA).
Originally from Brazil, Kathlyn immigrated to Australia in 2008. With over a decade of experience in education and student support, she has worked closely with people from diverse cultural backgrounds — insights that deeply inform her client work today. As a mother of two boys, Kathlyn also brings a grounded understanding of family dynamics and the complexities of everyday life, shaping the compassionate and practical approach she brings to her sessions.
Kathlyn draws on a person-centred, non-directive style, with a focus on empathy, basic mindfulness interventions, and cultural sensitivity. Sessions are available in English and Portuguese and are delivered one-on-one via secure telehealth. No referral is needed to book.
